Make Selecting the Right Tie a Cinch.

Selecting the right tie is nothing to fret over.  The first rule to picking a tie is knowing your dress shirt. What type of dress shirt is it – solid or patterned? What type of color is it? Dark or light? Once you've determined your shirt, there are some simple guidelines to picking the right tie to go with your dress shirt.

Wearing a Solid Dress Shirt:

When wearing a solid colored dress shirt, you can choose to wear either a patterned or a solid tie.  If you go with a solid colored tie, you can choose to either use complementary or analogous colors.

Two complementary colours placed next to each other, will create a strong contrast.  For example, if you wear a light colored shirt, choose a complementary bold dark color to stand out.   Such as a light blue shirt with an orange tie.

Analogous colors are different shades of colours in the same colour family. For example, if you wear a dark blue or navy shirt, choose a tie in the blue colour family.

If you wish to wear a patterned tie with your solid colored shirt, make sure one of the colors in your patterned tie match the solid shirt or at the very least, is from the same color family.
Wearing a Patterned Dress Shirt:

A patterned dress shirt is sometimes a little harder to match. If you’re going for a solid tie with your patterned shirt, you need to match the solid color of your tie to one of the colors in your patterned shirt, or at least be in the same color family.

If you are looking to match a pattern tie with a patterned shirt, this could get a little tricky. The first rule is to ensure that your tie is darker than your shirt. This helps it to not pop too much. Another rule is to make sure the proportions of the patterns on your shirt are different from those on your tie. For example, if your shirt has small check patterns select a tie with larger checks or thicker stripes.

So there you have it! You can now breathe easy the next time you need to put on a tie with your dress shirt. Tie selection will be a cinch!
